What is Work Experience (WEX)?

ABOUT WEX

WEX is designed for grade 12 (and responsible grade 11) students to explore and mentor in a local workplace environment to gain first hand ("real world") knowledge about a perspective career field while attaining credits for graduating. Work experience is intended to help prepare students for the transition from secondary school to the real world or further education and training for post secondary studies.

This course is as much a community project as it is a school curriculum course. Students will work within our community making connections and dealing with professionals in industries from our local Hatchery, to our Mechanic shops, to our restaurant/ hotels and many other trades and worksites.

What will students do on the job?

While working at a job site of their choice, students will work as a trainee learning all the ins and outs of the job. Students will demonstrate a responsible work ethic and be a valued member of the team. Students should arrive punctually on the agreed upon day and time to work with a positive attitude and be ready to learn. We hope to place students where they would best fit, not only for their interests, but also for the employer as we value the opportunity the employer has allowed our students to be a part of.

WEX 12 Requirements

To complete the SAMS WEX course students will work on site 85 hours over one semester, usually on Fridays or a pre arranged day. Students will complete an additional 35 hours of in class work to complete the 120 required hours. For WEX 12B the course material will have already been covered and students will work 110 hours with the addition of project based learning in class. Work typically happens during the normal school day: typically Friday and/or weekends or evenings if the chosen work place is only open during those specific times.
